June 05 Growth in Japanese Mobile Phone Subscriptions Pushed by 3G

According to data released by the Japanese Telecommunications Carriers Association, NTT DoCoMo had the biggest growth in mobile phone subscriptions in June with 176,500 new subscribers. It had 827,500 new subscriptions for its 3G services, but subscriptions to 2G services dropped by 651,000. It had a total of 49.3 million subscribers at the end of June. KDDI posted an increase of 160,200 users, with 3G subscriptions growing by 228,700 and 2G subscriptions falling by 68,400, leading to a total of 20.1 million users. Vodafone saw its subscriber base grow for the first time since December 2004. Its 3G subscriptions grew by 126,500 and 2G subscriptions decreased by 121,200, making for a net increase of 5,300 in June, leading to total of 15.0 million subscribers. Vodafone's first increase in six months was attributed to the introduction of new phones, flat-rate services and marketing promotions.
